The London based creative studio Based Upon has defied categorisation since it was founded by twin brothers Ian and Richard Abell and Alex Welch in 2004. Interdisciplinary artists, sculptors and crafters of fine furniture they do an especially extraordinary line in grand pianos, and now - miniaturising their iconic Mobius strip bespoke sculptures - also jewellery. “Touching my heart she said, one day we will all be on the same side” is a pendant that speaks poignantly, and hopefully, to this era's seemingly endless appetite for conflict and binary thinking.
Based Upon are pioneering a new era of luxury. Through a deep understanding of provenance, materiality and emotional resonance, the studio specialises in multi-layered narratives and philosophies. Running across every diverse project they undertake, however, is a singular purpose: to redefine ‘true value’ and the way it is experienced. At Based Upon, preciousness is exalted; private commissions, public municipal artworks, luxury interiors and prestigious brand collaborations each carry profound meaning.
Formed in bronze or as an edition of 12 in silver, the wearable sculpture takes the shape of a möbius strip – a unique and extraordinary geometry that has only one edge, one side, and no beginning or end. In this edition it comprises the words, “Touching my heart she said, one day we will all be on the same side”. The jewellery points to a world in which the space between the edges is valued as much as the edges themselves and proves the existence of one side doesn’t always imply another.
It is said that the taking of sides is the origin of all conflict, and this is exacerbated at a time when we are encouraged to make binary decisions between political, religious and social beliefs on a daily basis. As a studio that has long specialised in the communication of multi-layered narratives, philosophies and sacred ideas, Based Upon has created this piece as a reminder to consider different perspectives.
The first in Based Upon’s wearables collection is derived from their signature Möbius series, where a mathematical loop can be commissioned in grand-scale as a sculpture, or in miniature to be worn. The series enables a client to take a phrase or mantra that is important to them and transform it into a physical legacy. As a celebration of language and art, Mobius forges connections that resonate in a piece that endures.
The ‘Touching my heart she said, one day we will all be on the same side’ möbius pendant is available to purchase at BasedUpon.Store. Prices start from £750.
